The United States needs more electrical capacity
than it can build.

Electricity demand is rising after fifteen years of nearly flat consumption. Meeting it by building new supply means joining a queue that already holds close to twice the entire operating fleet, where the average wait has been measured in years. So the capacity that can be added fastest is the capacity that is already installed, sitting in facilities, and has never been measured.

Why New Supply Takes Years

Berkeley Lab, Queued Up. Active capacity in United States interconnection queues as of the end of 2024, and the average time in the queue for projects that reached commercial operation that year. Berkeley Lab also reports the median duration roughly doubling, from under 2 years for projects built between 2000 and 2007 to over 4 years for those built between 2018 and 2024.

    EIA projects total installed capacity has to rise by 50 to 90% by 2050 across its cases. That is a construction programme, not a procurement decision.

    A facility does not get to wait for it. A charger installation, a heat pump retrofit or a tenant fit-out has a date, and the grid queue does not move for it.

    So the question in front of the person holding the project is never the national one. It is whether the service they already have can carry what they are about to add.

    That question has an answer today, it takes days to get, and it is the one part of this problem a facility actually controls.

NEC 220.87 takes the demand the facility actually recorded, times 125%. The Department of Energy and Berkeley Lab are both working on avoiding service upgrades this way.

How much spare capacity sits in American commercial facilities is not known. Nobody has measured it. That is the whole of what we are here to change.

    A facility that can prove its spare capacity does not wait for capacity it already has. The project goes ahead on the service that is already in the ground.

    A facility that genuinely has no room finds out in days rather than after months of argument, and its upgrade starts earlier for it. That is acceleration too.

    Either way the answer is a sealed document an authority accepts, so the question is settled once rather than relitigated at the permit counter.

    Each facility that measures is one fewer waiting on new supply. That is the whole of the contribution, and it is made one service at a time.
